“Meredith, Mona and I were talking about the things brides would collect prior to getting married for their hope chests,” explained Dressler when asked how the exhibit came about.
The hope chest itself was typically inherited from one’s mother or another female relative, or could be purchased.
Longley said she began sewing items for her trousseau when she was a young girl.
By age 11 she had completed a sampler that is on display in the exhibit, and had crocheted doilies and embroidered handkerchiefs.

Many of her pieces begin as vintage dresses, before she cuts up the fabric and hand sews it into intricate rosettes, often topped with a piece of costume jewelry.
She also works with brides to create wedding accessories, many of which are made from vintage wedding dresses.
How she got started:bridesmaid dresses Hilbert lived in Savannah, Ga., for three years before moving back to Iowa a year ago, and was inspired by the genteel southern culture there.
She made some of her own clothes but was drawn to accessories in particular.
“Originally, I did it for selfish reasons,” she said. “I wanted to make stuff for me.
And I like the idea of taking something old with a story behind it and turning it into something more modern and current.
” Though she is a painter by trade, Hilbert learned about fiber arts from her mother,prom dresses who is a seamstress. She also loves to shop thrift stores, evening dresses which is how she acquired many of the materials for her pieces.

(Find details at Challenges: Hilbert said she has been fortunate to have been featured on the front page of Etsy.com and on admirers’ blogs, but she still has to put in a lot of work updating her shop and renewing items to keep it fresh. “When so many people are making something similar, the most important thing I can provide is good craftsmanship and really good customer service,” she said.
Rewards: Though Hilbert has a part-time job, she said her crafting has become her main job.
“When you do what you love, it doesn’t feel like work,” she said. “I could sit at home all day and sew, and it just feels like fun to me.

Most households had overstuffed couches with crocheted or embroidered antimacassars along the back and over the arms.

“Every household had doilies on the furniture,” said Longley.
“Years ago the furniture was either waxed or oiled mother of the bride dresses. You didn’t have the water resistant finishes you have today. We used tablecloths and doilies under everything. We also did a lot of embroidery on pillowcases and for shelf edgings … As a teenager, you learned to make a lot of things.
” Longley sewed and mended many of the items currently on display in the historical society exhibit. Besides the many doilies and embroidered napkins, pillowcases and hand towels, she mended the bridesmaid and wedding gowns and crocheted an afghan that is hanging over a hope chest.
Dressler had a different experience from Longley when she was growing up.flower girl dresses “I lived in Florida, so we didn’t have overstuffed couches. But we did have the place settings for holidays and Sunday dinners. You’d bring out all of your very best stuff.
” The early 20th century porcelain dinnerware used to set the table at the museum belonged to Linda’s father’s mother, Rosamay Fitzhebert. Linda’s mother, Dorothy Lukens Fritts, owned the 1920’s art deco silver flatware.
“For the exhibit, flower girl dresses we set up a menu and that’s how we knew to set the table,” said Dressler.
The menu included shrimp cocktail, garden salad, party dresses split pea and ham soup, pork, boiled potatoes with gravy, green beans almandine, dinner rolls, pickles and relishes, cake and ice cream, and coffee and tea. A sign on the table asks the visitor to try to identify the dishes and utensils used for each part of the meal.
Longley’s mother, Beatrice Blanchard, did alterations and sewed wedding gowns, dance costumes, first communion dresses and flowers on veils of hats.

Bryan Johnson, who uses the design name Lance Bryanson, had no prior experience designing dresses, quinceanera dresses though his family says he was always artistic.
“I just put pen to paper and the ideas started flowing,”bridal gowns said Bryan Johnson, Chic Formals’ lead designer.
Bryan Johnson said he met with younger people, promgoers and others and took their ideas on what it would take to make an ideal dress.

Brad and Bryan’s mom Terri Johnson, vice president of customer service,bridal gowns helps with choosing colors for the dresses, which designs are popular and what styles are selling well.
“I’ve taken ideas from everybody, from kids to grandparents,” Bryan Johnson said.
Bryan Johnson said his favorite is the “Sophia,” a white chiffon dress featuring an empire waist decorated in silver sequins and a single strap with a silver sequined design flowing over the shoulder.
“Everyone’s looking at your back,” Bryan Johnson said.
“Why don’t you put something in the back that people can see?
” Brad Johnson said Chic Formals sees an opportunity to capture market share from competitors and he believes they can offer better service to store owners than other bridal wholesalers.
Why?
For one, Chic Formals doesn’t require a minimum order pearl earrings.
Many formal wear companies require stores to buy six to seven samples to be able to order from them, a move that can get expensive for a small store, the Johnsons explained.
And Chic Formals plans to carry stock for shorter turnaround times wedding gowns.
“If someone’s not ordering something out of the box, it’s going to be there in a week,” Brad Johnson said.
Customers will be able to buy dresses and items such as matching cummerbunds and vests for the tuxedos through H&D and so far through at least five other locations, said Brad and Steve Johnson.
